Apple releases new iPods
The world’s worst-kept secret is out and new iPods have now arrived onto the market. Here’s a brief rundown on all the fuss:
* iPod Shuffle – down from $69 to $65 – no obvious change to the design.
* iPod nano – bigger screen – lower battery life (video runtime down from 5 to 4 hours) – 8GB price drop from $249 to $199.
* iPod Classic – 80GB and 160GB models replaced by a single 120GB for $339 (previous 80GB was $319)
* iPod Touch – same screen, slight change to the case work – 8GB price drop from $399 to $329.
Most of the remaining specs seem to be the same although it’s not clear whether the nano will still output video to an external device as the previous-gen nano could.
***UPDATE: Checked with Apple this afternoon – the new iPod does output video to external devices at up to 640×480-pixels, just like the old model.
All players apart from the Shuffle handle MPEG4 or H.264 video at up to 640×480-pixel resolution and up to 2.5Mbps.
The new nano’s screen appears to have the same basic 320×240-pixel resolution and if you’re encoding videos to this device, your best bet to maximise quality and storage is to encode your videos to this frame size.
