UserOS Ultra 8.10 – get your ideas in

With Xubuntu 8.10 soon to hit beta, we’re about to get under way with development for UserOS Ultra 8.10 so if you’ve got ideas for features you’d like to see in this latest version of our slim OS, now’s the time to speak up.

We’ll be incorporating some features from UserOS Extreme and UserOS Home Server but our aim will be to keep the Live CD distro to under 500MB but still be filled with useful applications that aren’t characterised as “bloatware”.

Plse think about a UPNP server so that devices like the PS3 can make use of it.

  I’ll take a look and see what I can do – however, that might be a great feature for UserOS Home Server 9.04… If we can get it in and keep ULTRA under our desired “all up weight”, it’ll hopefully happen.

Hi,

first thing that is absolutely needed: Please keep the iso size under 700 megs for CD drives, or if it goes over, make it on multiple CDs and a DVD.

Second thing, I believe that this OS will need a better antivirus than that supplied with OS Extreme, as AVG just doesn’t cut it (I was using it when my computer got destroyed… by a virus.) I was thinking something along the lines of Avast, if it can be done, or two programs if it can’t.

third thing, Do the install differently.
Basically, instead of all those apps and games being build into the OS, you should have the OS itself, with a few apps like firefox, openoffice, and antivirus etc.
Then have other apps, like games and things on a separate CD/DVD which you isntall after the OS has been installed.

  UserOS Extreme was a special case OS that we wanted for new systems that would already have a DVD burner.
  The next one will fit on a single 700MB CD-R disc.

First of ALL, make this distribution downloadable after, say 2 months, the publishing of that PC magazine issue.

The community is willing to help if there is any trouble. It’s the spirit of the open source software. Don’t be shy this time :)

Xubuntu 8.10 released 30/10/08 but no UserOS Ultra 8.10 found yet. Can you advise when we may see it on PC USER DVD as this may be perfect for my uses – Data files (OpenOffice), Internet & Email with very little other uses required.

  John, what I can say is that we’ll be releasing our first Linux operating system for 2009 very shortly and it will be based on Xubuntu 8.10. Unfortunately, I can’t be any more specific at this stage. Developing an operating system, even one based on an existing platform, takes time to get right. And that’s not to mention the time it takes to write up stories, go through the publishing process and even the basics of mass DVD production. Sorry, but you’ll just have to be patient for a bit longer yet.

Hi don`t forget dialup users , User OS-Extreme 8.04 dialup was a breeze to setup for a novice linux user like myself.regards Zelga
