Fix Update for PC User Ripping & Burning Toolbox 2009

Here it is – Ripping & Burning Toolbox 2009 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

I’ve been up to my eyeballs in products for the next issue of PC User but I’ve found time to take a look at the Ripping & Burning Toolbox 2009 software and some of the issues a few readers have been having.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to replicate the problems on my Windows XP Pro or Windows Vista Ultimate systems so I’m flying a bit blind on this.

That said, I think the problem has been with the optical disc drive detection. So, I’ve rewritten it.

Installation instructions

For now, you install your original Ripping & Burning Toolbox 2009 install file from the May 2009 cover disc and then install the update. The update will overwrite the original Ripping & Burning Toolbox 2009 executable but you need the original for all of the other goodies it has that are not in the SP1 update.

I’d appreciate if someone who had trouble with the original file could try the update and let me know if it solves the problem for them, that’d be great.

Cant detect optical drive. Installed your SP1 update and dont get the error message but nothing shows in optical drive dropdown list. System is Acer5720 laptop running Vista Home edition

  Graeme, click on the Output tab. This gives you the output of the command-line tools R&B Toolbox uses. For drive detection, it uses CDrecord. If CDrecord says it can’t find it, unfortunately, there’s not much I can do about it. CDrecord is used via a command-line switch called “scanbus” that scans the computer for optical disc drives. Since CDrecord also does the burning, it needs to be able to find the drive first before it can burn and if it can’t find the drive, there’s no way I can make it find it unfortunately.

  No, at this stage it cannot be downloaded however an updated version will be released later in the year in Australian PC User magazine.

Hello Darren, I am (unfortnately) running Vista(SP1) and got the NilObject Exception problem. I have just downloaded your SP1 fix, but I’m afraid that that would only unpack until the third file, sticking & refusing at the dll file “C:\ProgramFiles\PC User R&B TolBox\RipBurnToolbox 2009 Libs\Appearance Pak.dll”

I am very aware that you must be feeling vey overloaded with all this, but if you do have any help, I’d very m,uch appreciate it.

to make this work on vista you need to change user security settings to “full control” on the program folder and children. After this is done you can start it normally and it also fixed the issue with the software not locating optical drives.

Hello Darren, Is there anywhere on the web that I can download Rockpod 3 ?, I unistalled it and was going to do the upgrade but do you think I can find my disk ??? It must be in the same place where the missing socks go to. I have done a quick Google search but nada. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

  Sorry, but no – RockPod 3 is only available on the PC User Jan2010 cover disc.

Observations using the cd ripper/encoder in the 2009 PC User toolbox.
Computer1 – On insertion of cd checks freedb.org for details and finds none. Disk rips ok for titling and tagging manually.
Computer2 – On insertion of cd checks freedb.org for details and finds them. Program then indicates ripping track 1 of 14 then goes to encoding track 2 of 14 when a “NilObjectException” report is generated.
As the program generally does not present any problems could it be that the data base is corrupted?
The problem mainly occurs with “The Best Of –“ “The Greatest” etc though not in every instance. It is also strange why the data base is found / not found on different computers.
