Panasonic DMR-BW880 storage: Japan gets 1000GB, Australia only gets 500GB
Something isn’t sounding right with the announcement in Australia today of Panasonic’s new Blu-ray-ready digital video recorder range.
Either Panasonic’s local PR has got the specifications wrong or the company has decided that Australia doesn’t need to get the same storage consumers in Japan get.
The announcement made in Australia today states as follows:
The DMR-BW880 and DMR-BW780 offer 500GB and 250GB HDD recording respectively.
However, when these same models were announced in Japan on January 20 this year, they were reported by Cnet (and other sources) as having 1000GB storage on the BW880 and 750GB for the BW780.
You can read thisĀ from Panasonic’s own website here. (This is a link to the Japanese website but it’s as clear as day the Japanese version features 1000GB of storage). We’ve copied the images from both the BW780 and BW880 here from the Japanese website.
The situation is even worse for those thinking about the DMR-BW780 – in Japan, you get a nice 750GB hard drive. In Australia, a very skinny 250GB drive.
Now it’s known that salt water does cause things to shrink but this is the first time I’ve heard of products leaving Japan and losing storage by the time they reach Australian shores.
We are awaiting a response from Panasonic’s Australian PR on this and we’ll report back as soon as we get an answer.
In the meantime, buy one of these new recorders in Australia and certainly based on the specs from Panasonic’s own Japanese website, you’d have every reason to feel like you’ve been given a very raw deal.
Not happy, Panasonic.
