While there are rumours starting to flow that Microsoft could well be about to reinstate the Start button into Windows Blue aka Windows 8.1, there’s no need to wait if you a running a Windows 8 (not Windows RT) computer – there’s a way you can have the Start button back right now.
And that’s to install Classic Shell. It’s a simple app to use – you download it, run the installation, click the OK button and you’re done.
It’ll give you a Windows Vista style Start button and menu, not quite Windows 7 but certainly better than nothing at all. It can also be configured now to bypass the Metro/Modern User Interface so you don’t even see it.
Windows 8 does have some very good new features including faster boot times and excellent support for SSDs (solid state drives) so, if the lack of a Start button is holding you back, Classic Shell is one way to fix a major gripe with Windows 8.
And best of all, it’s free.
