REVIEW – BenQ G2400WD 24-inch widescreen LCD

g2400wdSUMMARY: HDMI-ready and full 1920×1200-pixel resolution for around $350. Not perfect but at that price, it’s pretty damn hard to argue with it.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen the “sweet spot” for monitor prices slowly rise up the screen size ladder. First, it was 19-inch widescreen, then more recently 22-inch widescreens became very affordable. Now it looks as though it’s the turn of 24-inch widescreen LCD monitors to become cost effective.

BenQ is the latest brand to join the ranks however, this new G2400WD is definitely a must-see. It’s not quite going to live up to Dell’s 2407WFP and all its extra features but at half the price, the G2400WD doesn’t have to.

This 24-inch widescreen LCD panel features a native resolution of 1920×1200-pixels as well as VGA, DVI-D and HDMI inputs. It’s this last input option that makes the G2400WD a neat option. HDMI means its ready to handle Blu-ray movies, whether from your PC, notebook or even a Blu-ray player. It’s also suitable for high-end gaming with a PS3 or Xbox 360.

It’s good – but it’s not perfect. There’s no base swivel here, height adjustment or portrait mode. There are also no analog video input options available. While the panel is incredibly sharp to play games at native screen resolution, we’re not convinced by the 4,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. On games, it looked good. On movies, we weren’t so sure with blacks looking a little muddy but that will also depend on the movie encoding as well.

It has an auto-sync control that allows the screen to adjust itself to your PC/notebook’s graphics output. Colour accuracy is good and there is good even-ness in the backlight.

However, the bottom line is for a $350 online price, and with HDMI, it’s a pretty decent monitor. You won’t find an HDMI-ready Dell for that price.
