Q&A

Over the next little while, I’ll be adding some “question and answer” stories. So if you’re looking for answers to some common (and not so common) problems, just look for the “Q&A” tag.

If you have any Qs, send them to me at: darren at darrenyates dot com dot au.

I cannot promise to give a personal answer but I will put all Q&As up on the site so check the ‘Q&A’ tag for other Q&As.

    HI,

I bought the November 2010 Edition of the mag for the Video Tutorials only to realize that i was missing the cover CD. Is there anyway possible I can get the PC User Video Toolkit as a download as I really want to compare its results to those offed by my paid for ImToo Conversion Suite.

    Cheers.

I’m a PC User Subscriber, could you tell me Which edition had the cover disc containing DVD Double Shrink on it. I don’t know how far back it was.
Otherwise, where could I download it. I have a need for such a program just now.

Arthur, it’s going back a bit – you need the May 2007 cover disc.
      Cheers,
      Darren.

    Hi Darren
The latest PCUser has two tools included in the featured tools segment via Link Harris. “Active Ports” and “CurrPorts”, both are good but “Active Ports” is perfect for what I want.
    Thanks for your help

    Hi Darren,
I am still running windows xp pro. Recently, I couldn’t not download anything from the internet ( not even updates ). Couldn’t get into windows firewall at all to check setting. It says ” windows cannot start windows firewall/internet connection service (ics). Microsoft help website suggests to run “netsh winsock reset” which I did with no success. Then I tried to install the file ” Netfw.inf ” but I could find the hidden folder %Windir%\Inf in which Netfw.inf resites.
Any help is very much appreciated. I am trying to avoid reformat the hard drive or reinstall xp.

      Give this a go – http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920074
My tip would be to make sure you have the latest service pack installed for any version of Windows but especially for XP. The latest is SP3 and its available here.
      Hope this helps,
      Darren.

Try right-clicking and selecting “Run as Administrator”.
That said, YouTube has changed the website around and stuffed up some downloads.
YouGrab 4 is in the works to fix the problems.
      Cheers,
      Darren.

    Hi Darren
TV Rip has me confused, my USB HDD had to be formatted to suit the TV (Panasonic) recorded shows cannot be accessed on computer as the HDD format is not recognized. Can you help with a solution

    • Darren Yates
#61 written by Darren Yates 2 years ago

Sorry, Ed, but I don’t quite understand your problem. You’re saying your hard drive is not being recognised by the computer and that TVrip has you confused?
Don’t see how the two are related.
      Cheers,
      Darren.

#62 written by Ed 2 years ago

Your tutorial for TV Rip said that recorded files from TV can be transferred to computer for saving or later viewing. I have successfully saved and played back TV shows to a USB HDD connected to TV. But when I connect this USB HDD to my computer it is not recognized as the drive had to be formatted to suit the TV, Not Computer. I guess the confusion is, how can I make TV Rip work if the HDD is not recognized when changed over to the computer? On your tutorial your PVR files were listed under My Documents how do I get them there?

        • Darren Yates
#63 written by Darren Yates 2 years ago

Ah, okay I understand. However, your problem is unusual as most PVR-capable set-top boxes and similar devices that support TV capture to USB storage do so using the standard FAT32 filesystem. So the first problem is getting your PC to recognise it. The fact that it doesn’t doesn’t augur well for it. That said, it’d help if you told me the make and model of the device doing the capturing.

Hello Darren, You are brilliant! I appreciate all the wonderful work you have done in providing for us your beautiful master pieces. I have your vm software up and running and have windows on top of windows so I can surf securely Though I’d rather run your OS Select and Android. I downloaded I Android 2.2 ISO onto a CD and it acted like it was booting when I popped it in and started it up but it just kept saying it was reading Android for the next hour or so filling the screen with a series of dots. This is a prime example why I wish everything you guys talk about would be on your disk as a lot of us only trust ya’ll. Many of us don’t even have the privilege of access to the net at home. Anyway what I mainly would like to ask for is instructions on how I can use wifi on either Windows XP or your OS when in virtual mode? When I have the chance I connect at my friends or McDonald’s through wifi using puppy linux iso but I can’t figure how to do it in your OS or XP in your virtual machine.

    Thank you again SOOOO MUCH!

Sorry to bother you again but I have couple of more questions, the first being, How does anyone write to PC User Mag as the ASK WIZARD has been down for repair, I believe since 2005? The reason I ask that is I am not sure if you would be the one for this next question as I know you have so much on your plate.

This is DRIVING ME CRAZY! I am in NZ at the moment and I have been using yahoomail.com for years. Over the past year something has changed that really gets up my nose. I go to the site I mentioned above and enter my address and password and then I am now pushed on to a site that has a split screen. Before you get to the split part it says “Oops, we can’t find you! Tell us your location. Help make your Yahoo! Mail more relevant. ” Now just above that it says “Hi! B” So it knows who I am. Now in the split part it gives me 2 choices it wants me to choose from:
    Left Side:
“I reside elsewhere (not New Zealand)
    >I am on holiday and currently in New Zealand
    >I’m returning to my own country very soon
    >My permanent home is not New Zealand ”
and then wants me to press a button:
    “I am leaving New Zealand”

    Right Side:
    “I reside in New Zealand
    >I live in New Zealand
    >By clicking below, I agree to the Yahoo!Xtra Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
These terms and privacy policy are governed by the laws of New Zealand and may be different from those in the country you created your account.”
It then gives me a button to click that says:
    “I Live in New Zealand”

I contacted yahoo xtra here but they swear to me that they are not the ones producing this site.

I have a very long way around this but I sure hate doing it. Who business is it and why can’t I put an address in my search that takes me to where I want to go like they used to ie. Google. When I read Angus Kidman’s DIY Proxy p64 of April I thought finally a way around all this but once I went to the various sites they looked VERY suspect with pop ups all the time. Who is watching me and my business via these sites

I hope you can save me all this hassle!

    Thank you again!

    Hi Darren,

I have attempted to convert avi to everything using PC user video toolkit 2 but all the output files have no audio.
The source file is a small avi from mini dv using a pcm_s16le audio codec.
Thanks for any help you can give
    Lee (new to video stuff)

Lee, what does the Output tab say?
Are there any messages about incorrect audio codec?
Have you selected an audio codec?
Is the Enable Audio checkbox checked?

      Cheers,
      Darren.

Hi Darren, would like to thank you for the PC User OS you keep providing fantastic, really starting to get a bit of an understanding of Linux.
I do have a problem with latest server release 11.04.
My machine has 8 gig of ram, and i was wanting to run VM from linux to launch windows but the server version only is 32bit.
So hence OS can only see 3.5 gig of ram.
I tried to install PAE after doing some reading but this only slowed the OS down so much it could not be used,
Do you think you can create a 64bit version please

    • Darren Yates
#76 written by Darren Yates 1 year ago

      Hi Harry,
We ummed and ahhed a bit over this issue this time around and chose 32-bit because we expected it to be used on older hardware.
I suspect the next version of Home Server could be 64-bit – but don’t hold me to it… :)
      Cheers,
      Darren.

No, RockPod 4 doesn’t support ISO files. Basically, ISO images are DVDs in a single ISO image.
Without looking at it in too much depth, one way would be to burn the movie to DVD, rip it using SmartRipper, DVD Decrypter etc and then running it through RockPod 4 or something else.
    Cheers,
    Darren.

Harry, sorry but off the top of my head, I’m not sure what the answer is.
There is a way to add a second user from the command prompt – google “useradd” and that hopefully might point you in the right direction.
    Cheers,
    Darren.
