    Hi

Having a problem with UT3 benchmark. When I click on your the userbench demo I receive an “exception of class OutOfBoundsException was not handled” message. Any ideas?

    Thanks

I’ve had a different error message for the UT3 benchmark, it says ‘an exception of class NilObjectException was not handled, the application must shut down’, on top of that I had a corrupted UT3 Demo installation on the DVD, fortunately I found another copy of UT3 Demo on an older PC User DVD Feb 08

Did you grab the latest version from the PC User website? Should be Build 44.
Details are in the Jan2010 issue of PC User on page 66.
        Cheers.

Rockpod 2009 is a great piece of software and I ws looking forward to the new version. I’ve installed Rockpod 3, including the 513 build fix but find it rather slow. Rockpod 2009 takes my computer about 1.5 hours to transcode a 90 minute movie. While Rockpod 3 appears to work, I gave up waiting after it took 2 days to get 38% through a 90 minute move.

      December 24, 2009 at 7:05 am

      Bill,
By default, RockPod 3 aims for higher quality at lower bit rates and to do that, it implements two things – 1) two-pass encoding 2) high-quality encoding options.
While you cannot turn off the two-pass encoding, you can turn off the high-quality encoding options, which speeds things up. Just check off the Hi-Q option on the front-page of RockPod 3.
RockPod 3 can do the same quality as RockPod 2009 but in much less space – however it needs more horsepower to do it. And with many users now having multi-core Intel and AMD processors, we made the decision to take advantage of that to get more efficient (space-wise) encoding.
      Cheers,
      Darren.

        Hi Darren,

Thanks for that. I’ve got to the end of a transcoding. I think the problem I was having was that the ‘Duration’ setting was wrong. I’ve been converting from vobs to avis and the duration doesn’t always default to a sensible value. Anyway I’m haveing fun with it now. Thanks for another great product.

        Best regards, Bill.

    Hi Darren,
Just received February 2010 magazine issue. On the cover DVD I decided to try PC Tools Desktop Maestro 3.0 with free 12 month license. After following registration instructions to obtain license name and code I arrived at PC Tools Web page which stated, “The promotion you are attempting to access is not valid in your country. If you believe this message to be displayed in error please contact us at: support@pctools.com.” When I emailed PC tools support I was told to follow instructions in magazine? Going around in circles. Are you able to help? Regards, Edward.

Nope, there are no games on UserOS Extreme 9.04. We decided no remove them to keep the distro under 1GB. If there’s sufficient demand, we’ll look at putting some smaller games on the next version.

    Hi Darren,
I installed the dvd-hd 2009 and ran the conversion 1st time successfully. The next time I used it, An error code ” An exception of class NilObjectException was not handled. The application must shut down” appeared and I had to abort. Any idea what causes it.
Also, I noticed my dvd burner would not play cd anymore but plays dvd no problem. Not too sure that these problems are related.

    Hi Darren,
I have a problem concerning recovery disks of my laptop (HP DV2000), hope you can help.
I had 2xHP DV2000 identical laptops for myself and wife. I made the recovery disks from my laptop only, thinking they have the same specs. Recently I disposed mine and my wife”s hdd crashed and had to be replaced. The problem is her laptop wouldn’t accept my recovery disks (0n 10xcds).
Is there any way round it ? I need all the softwares to operate the webcam, special keys etc.

    • Darren Yates
      February 23, 2010 at 2:37 pm

Eddie, I’m afraid I don’t know what you can do here. Other than contact HP directly and see if their technical experts can help. If the recovery discs are looking for something specific in the notebook (as they appear to be doing), it’ll be hard to fix.
The only thing I can think of is that it might be going off the CPU ID number. You might be able to switch this off in the BIOS (check your manual to get into the BIOS) but it’s a long shot and I wouldn’t bet the house on it.
Other than that, you could try a retail version of the OS and you might find the required driver software on HP’s website. Other than that, calling up HP tech support would be the first point of call.
      Hope that helps,
      Cheers,
      Darren.

What if I convert the recovery discs to 1 image file and burn that to another hdd(B), if I substitute hdd(B) in the laptop, would it work ?

    Hi Darren,

I record off-air 720*576 standard definition DTV as an mpeg2 PS file with a Dvico PCI TV card. The off-air programme displays on my Samsung Series 8 TV as 16:9 and I assume that this occurs under the control of Active Format Descriptors as SD’s 720*576 native resolution is not 16:9.

If I play the mpeg-2 file off a USB key via my Western Digital media player on to the Samsung Series 8 tv, then I get the correct 16:9 display.

If however I play the file off the USB key via the USB slot on the Series 8 tv, then the widescreen format is lost and the picture reverts to 720*576. The same thing happens if I stream the file via DLNA connectivity.

I’ve temporarily overcome the problem by using ffmpeg at command line level to convert the 720*576 out to 1024*576 to bring it back to 16:9.

I suspect that the Samsung tv in “player” mode is not recognizing AFD data embedded in the mpeg-2 file. Am I on the right track? Have you come across this before? Is there any easier solution than having to run all recorded files through ffmpeg?

I’ve searched the usual forums but can’t come up with anything and I’ve contacted the Samsung help line but they say that this is “normal” behaviour.

Regards and thanks for the great ffmpeg projects.

    Hi Darren,

I am trying to install September version of PC-User PerfectPC 2.0 Beta. Unfortunately, it keeps throwing up the error, “An exception of class OutOfboundsException was not handled. The application must shutdown”. I have tried reinstalling, running as administrator, 2 different computers, (both XP Pro, SP3, and up to date) even installed in wine in Linux Mint 9.

Is there a solution to this problem. I doubt that I am the only one and I am very keen to try it as its time for me to upgrade my desktop to a new system.

Hi darren, i’ve been reading the sep issue of PC user and noticed a comment about downloading Youtube audio using Yougrab 3 in the Audio superguide.

I did purchase the August issue but didn’t really have much time that month to read it as i was posted away. In short i left it at work where it was stolen and now i can’t get a copy of Yougrab 3.

I was wondering if you could help me out with a copy?

    Hello Darren,

Your PC User TVrip program in the May, 2010 issue
is exactly what I was looking for. My problem, however, is that whilst the program will convert .flv files to .mkv format files it will not convert windows media centre .dvr-ms or my
set top box .pvr files .
The convert process completes in about 1 second flat no matter how big the file to be converted and writes a .mkv file to the nominated directory of 0kb length.
I am using Windows Vista Home Premium and any help you can offer would be much appreciated.

Creating a DVD does not seem to be a problem.

    Hi Darren

The TVrip program in the May 2010 issue of PC User is just what I was looking for however I have a problem when trying to convert files to the .mvk format.
While the program will convert .flv files OK I cannot convert window media centre .dvr-ms or my set top box .pvr files.
When doing this the process completes in about one second no matter how large the source file is and a .mvk file is written to the target directory with a length of 0 kb.
There is no problem when creating a dvd with any of the
    above file formats.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.
I appologise if this request has been duplicated as I think I accidently deleted the previous one.

      October 15, 2010 at 8:26 pm

Rex, do you mean “mkv”? We’re going to change and remove the option for “mkv” in TVRip 2.
Unfortunately, MKV support amongst TVs has been more hit-and-miss than we anticipated, so we’re investigating a different option, which will most likely be .mp4 instead. This will mean encoding in MPEG-4 SP (using libxvid) or H.264 (using libx264). Sorry not to get back to you sooner – it has been a crazy few months.
      Cheers,
      Darren.

        Hi Darren,

Yes indeed I was referring to “mkv” file conversion .

          October 26, 2010 at 2:52 pm

From what I’ve seen, MKV support on some big-name TVs that claim to support it has been pretty ordinary so I think we’re going to ditch MKV on version 2 of TVrip.
I’m thinking of one brand in particular…

    Dear Darren,

I am also having problem with TVrip. I had some mkv video files converted to dvd without any trouble. However, it would not copy to the dvd disc. It tried for a few secs and then it says it’s done and asked for another disc. I clicked the output and it says burn free not used. When I click “no”, everything disappeared. I couldn’t find where it put the vob files . Would appreciate your help greatly.

    • Darren Yates
      October 18, 2010 at 8:10 am

      Eddie,
That’s very odd about it not making discs – it’s the one thing it’s supposed to do well… :)
      A couple of tips:
      1. Launch TVrip using “Run as Administrator” – yep, it’s a pain in the bum but it’s a limitation with CDRECORD, the open-source disc burning app TVrip uses. It needs administrator privaleges in order to run. (we never had this problem on Windows XP… :)
      2. TVrip uses a two-stage process – it first makes an ISO image of the actual DVD, then burns it to the disc. You should be able to find the ISO image (DVD.ISO) in ProgramData/PCUserTVrip. To conserve space, the apps is designed to erase the ISO image when you shut the app down so leave the app open first, grab the ISO, then shut it down.
      3. To see what TVrip is actually doing, click on the OUTPUT button on the front screen – it gives you a read-out of the command-line apps.

      Hope this helps,
      Cheers,
      Darren.

I want to transfer movies from my HDD onto a USB to be able to watch it on another TV. How large does my USB need to be and what do I need to do to make it happen?

    Thanks

    • Darren Yates
      October 26, 2010 at 2:51 pm

You should be able to convert a movie into 4GB so it just depends on how many movies you want to get onto a USB flash drive.
Most 16GB flash drives go for around $40 Australian, so that’d be enough for at least four, probably six if you push it.
The bigger issue is to know what you’re going to play them on. You need to know which codecs (audio and video) the playback device (whether it’s a player or the TV itself) supports.
      Hope this helps.
      Cheers,
      Darren.

    Hi Darren
I have Windows Vista SP2 and IE8. The home page is nineMSN. Recently I received, through Windows Updater, to Update to “Windows Live Essentials 2011”. My Question concerns the Bing Bar. When the Bing Bar is loaded what does the final screen look like compared to the MSN screen currently used? This has a Bing symbol next to the MSN box in the top area of the page. Does the Bing Bar only effect this area of the screen and the rest of the nineMSN page stay the same. I have gotten used to the nineMSN page. The MSN page has news adverts etc on the lower two thirds of the page. Does this lower two thirds change, or only the the current MSN/Bing area? What is the final look of the page, as info from web search is telling me that MSN is gone and replaced by Bing Bar? Research shows Bing Bar a little slow? Can you advise of what to do?

Joe, sorry but not sure what I’m answering “yes or no” too. You should be able to choose a page other than Bing as your home page and save that as the default option. Not sure where to do that as I don’t use Windows Live myself.

Can you help me? Also way back in PCUSER you mentioned a program the would map the location of traffic from where it originated on a map of the world. December 1, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Bruce, I can’t remember off the top of my head. Does anyone else remember it? In the meantime, try looking in your system tray on the bottom right to see what programs you already have running. If there’s nothing there that looks like it, try doing a ctrl-alt-del and looking in the task manager for apps that are using up a fair bit of CPU – it won’t tell you exactly which app is using up the bandwidth, but it will tell you which apps are active and in the meantime, that might help you find that rogue app.
      Best of luck!

A useful little program for monitoring internet traffic is NetLimiter. It’s available here: http://www.netlimiter.com/ It comes in three versions including one free version, which I am using. Your tutorial for TV Rip said that recorded files from TV can be transferred to computer for saving or later viewing. I have successfully saved and played back TV shows to a USB HDD connected to TV. But when I connect this USB HDD to my computer it is not recognized as the drive had to be formatted to suit the TV, Not Computer. I guess the confusion is, how can I make TV Rip work if the HDD is not recognized when changed over to the computer? On your tutorial your PVR files were listed under My Documents how do I get them there?

Ah, okay I understand. However, your problem is unusual as most PVR-capable set-top boxes and similar devices that support TV capture to USB storage do so using the standard FAT32 filesystem. So the first problem is getting your PC to recognise it. The fact that it doesn’t doesn’t augur well for it. That said, it’d help if you told me the make and model of the device doing the capturing.

Hello Darren, You are brilliant! I appreciate all the wonderful work you have done in providing for us your beautiful master pieces. I have your vm software up and running and have windows on top of windows so I can surf securely Though I’d rather run your OS Select and Android. I downloaded I Android 2.2 ISO onto a CD and it acted like it was booting when I popped it in and started it up but it just kept saying it was reading Android for the next hour or so filling the screen with a series of dots. This is a prime example why I wish everything you guys talk about would be on your disk as a lot of us only trust ya’ll. Many of us don’t even have the privilege of access to the net at home. Anyway what I mainly would like to ask for is instructions on how I can use wifi on either Windows XP or your OS when in virtual mode? When I have the chance I connect at my friends or McDonald’s through wifi using puppy linux iso but I can’t figure how to do it in your OS or XP in your virtual machine.

    Thank you again SOOOO MUCH!

Sorry to bother you again but I have couple of more questions, the first being, How does anyone write to PC User Mag as the ASK WIZARD has been down for repair, I believe since 2005? The reason I ask that is I am not sure if you would be the one for this next question as I know you have so much on your plate.

This is DRIVING ME CRAZY! I am in NZ at the moment and I have been using yahoomail.com for years. Over the past year something has changed that really gets up my nose. I go to the site I mentioned above and enter my address and password and then I am now pushed on to a site that has a split screen. Before you get to the split part it says “Oops, we can’t find you! Tell us your location. Help make your Yahoo! Mail more relevant. ” Now just above that it says “Hi! B” So it knows who I am. Now in the split part it gives me 2 choices it wants me to choose from:
    Left Side:
“I reside elsewhere (not New Zealand)
    >I am on holiday and currently in New Zealand
    >I’m returning to my own country very soon
    >My permanent home is not New Zealand ”
and then wants me to press a button:
    “I am leaving New Zealand”

    Right Side:
    “I reside in New Zealand
    >I live in New Zealand
    >By clicking below, I agree to the Yahoo!Xtra Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
These terms and privacy policy are governed by the laws of New Zealand and may be different from those in the country you created your account.”
It then gives me a button to click that says:
    “I Live in New Zealand”

I contacted yahoo xtra here but they swear to me that they are not the ones producing this site.

I have a very long way around this but I sure hate doing it. Who business is it and why can’t I put an address in my search that takes me to where I want to go like they used to ie. Google. When I read Angus Kidman’s DIY Proxy p64 of April I thought finally a way around all this but once I went to the various sites they looked VERY suspect with pop ups all the time. Who is watching me and my business via these sites

I hope you can save me all this hassle!

    Thank you again!

    Hi Darren,

I have attempted to convert avi to everything using PC user video toolkit 2 but all the output files have no audio.
The source file is a small avi from mini dv using a pcm_s16le audio codec.
Thanks for any help you can give
    Lee (new to video stuff)

Lee, what does the Output tab say?
Are there any messages about incorrect audio codec?
Have you selected an audio codec?
Is the Enable Audio checkbox checked?

      Cheers,
      Darren.

Hi, I installed yougrab4 but when i click “download”, the download completes instantly, and the output file (mp4) cannot even be read by vlc media player. I chose to rip mp3 and even the file that is created doesn’t run on vlc

      Thanks.

    Hi Darren!

I have downloaded Yougrab 4 a month ago and it worked perfectly fine. I tried today again but when I pressed “Download”, it displayed “A execption of class OutOfBoundsExecption was not handled. The application will shut down. I reinstalled it but it still doesn’t work.
    Can you please help me?

    Thanks,

Hi Darren, would like to thank you for the PC User OS you keep providing fantastic, really starting to get a bit of an understanding of Linux.
I do have a problem with latest server release 11.04.
My machine has 8 gig of ram, and i was wanting to run VM from linux to launch windows but the server version only is 32bit.
So hence OS can only see 3.5 gig of ram.
I tried to install PAE after doing some reading but this only slowed the OS down so much it could not be used,
Do you think you can create a 64bit version please

      August 23, 2011 at 6:16 pm

      Hi Harry,
We ummed and ahhed a bit over this issue this time around and chose 32-bit because we expected it to be used on older hardware.
I suspect the next version of Home Server could be 64-bit – but don’t hold me to it… :)
      Cheers,
      Darren.

I’m slowly in the process of making my old PC User software available, but it has to come second to my paid work. I’ll try and dig it up if I can – it’ll be a .deb file you install direct in UserOS (or any Debian-based OS for that matter.)
      Cheers,
      Darren.

    Hi Darren
A while ago I asked Tech Life Magazine a question about whether my pc parts were compatible with each other. You answered my question in the Q&A of the September issue. Parts of your answer were a little confusing and I still have a few more queries about the recommended tweaks. I tried looking for the new Intel i5-4470 CPU that u recommended and I don’t know where to get it. Same goes for the motherboard (ASRock H77M). I am extremely fond of the PC-K9WX and would like to know if I can keep this case in the new build. I’m sure that I’m not going to over-clock or running two graphics cards. I agree that I should drop the fan controller and lighting. Also where your recommending the Radeon HD 7870 or the Radeon HD 7950. After taking in what u have said the current build will be
    CPU: Intel core i5-4470
    MOTHER BOARD: ?
    MEMORY: Corsair 8GB
    STORAGE: Seagate 2TB 7200RPM
    GPU: ?
    PSU: SilverStone 500w
    OPTICAL DRIVE:LG CH12LS28 Blu-ray/DVD combo drive
OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows 7 premium 64bit
    CASE: ?
Could you please keep in mind that I would like to be able to play games like Assassin’s Creed, Battlefield, Crisis 3, God of War, Batman Arkham City and other games similar to these. All the parts that I had chosen out before were all available to be purchased from pccasegear.com, could you please let me know where I can get the parts that you recommend and i also have a budget of $1200.00.
    Thanks

      Connor,
There are a few questions there. I’m not offering this as a paid service so I’ll help you as much as I can and then, it’s up to you.
      1. Look up StaticIce (www.staticice.com.au) for parts or try Mwave.com.au or skycomp.com.au.
      2. HIS’ 7950 sells for $279 on Mwave – I’d be going that out of those two. Your SilverStone 500-watt PSU is probably just enough.
      3. I’d be tempted to look at a B85-chipset board if you want to save a bit of money. ASUS, ASRock and Gigabyte all make one. ASUS’ doesn’t look bad.
      4. If you’re serious about gaming, you might have enough to consider a good 128GB SSD for your OS – game load times will be considerably faster. Sandisk Extreme 120GB will cost you about $130 online.
      Cheers,
      Darren.

I’ve been stuck on this for quite a while, which GPU would be better for gaming. (regardless of price, only performance matters)

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 2GB video card ($229.00)
    or
Gigabyte Radeon HD 7870 2GB video card ($249.00)

    • Darren Yates
      October 8, 2013 at 4:01 pm

      Ben,
Six of one; half a dozen of the other. It really depends on the games you’re playing – these GPUs are pretty close but the 7870 should do better at higher resolutions/settings as it has a higher memory bandwidth than the 660. Still, I’ve seen the 7950 for $279 and the new GTX 760 for around $300 is definitely worth a look.
      Cheers,
      Darren.

I have a Samsung Google Nexus mobile phone which was recently officially updated to android 4.3 from 4.1.2. I like to mirror video to my big tv , but Wireless Display is nowhere to be found on the phone. Googling did not find much information. Is Wireless Display an add-on applied to a particular phone or it is part of the newer android feature ? If so where can I find it ? I have another tablet running on android 4.2 and it has the Wireless Display feature on it.
Would you consider running an feature on Wireless Display on Tech Life or APC magazine in the near future ? Your longtime follower.

      June 2, 2014 at 10:43 am

It’s probable that the Nexus doesn’t include the right hardware to enable wireless display/Miracast. If the phone didn’t have the feature before, the software update alone won’t add it.
      Cheers,
      Darren.

Hi Darren , Just grabed the apc mag with video converter 3 so far having trouble understanding it / yes it comes up when you right click and go to a video but nothing seems to happen after that win 7 and xp

Any way womble is the best video eding pro but it wont handle the sound .m2ts video off an open box.. smart cutter is ok to edit video with / it only recodes where the edit starts and ends not the inbetween this speeds up the program / the trouble is the program they need to get it more stable
allso it is necessary to join all the .m2ts clips to gether first befor editing

so what is needed is a interface like you wrote for PC User ( I realy miss pcuser it was much better then tect life in fact in NP Nz it is hard to find it any longer)

Back to subject so your type of inter face joining .m2ts clips then edited like smartcutter and made ready for blue ray to burn with imgburn

    Cheers Keith
